A Beginner’s Guide To Hockey

April 6, 2009 by: admin

Any one who is familiar with hockey knows that the sport is very physically taxing, but that does not stop the activity from being a popular sport in areas as different as the United States, Canada, Russia, Norway, Sweden, and Scandinavia. In total, there will be twenty-two people playing the game, and they shall be rotated into the game at six players at a time. You will find an average game consists of 3 twenty minute periods, and an overtime that is divided into twenty minutes as well, until a player from either side manages to make a goal. Since tied games are no longer permissible under the NHL rules, this becomes an important way to break a tie game.

Hockey is a much different game from the one it began as, back in Europe where the referee was an audience member rather than on the field. These days there are actually two referees, and each of them make their home on the ice next to the players, coffering with each other and with the league officials watching on the sidelines is not unheard of. The league behavior of the past and today is very different because the regulations are much more organized, and they have added the penalty box. During the game, if a player is found to be breaking any moves that are not part of the league-accepted play, the player will be forced to sit out the rest of the period, and sometimes the rest of the game.Hockey

If you are a player who has problems getting called out too often in a game, you will likely find yourself getting penalty shots, to the detriment of your team, as those are points which go to the other team. Originally hockey had a full 30 players, and while that number has decreased drastically, the level of violence between players has not. The confrontations on the ice can be between fellow players, rival players, and sometimes even the referee gets involved in the brawl itself. Using their helmets or sticks would constitute assault with a weapon. That some hockey fights have caused the breaking of the rink side protective glass gives a good indication of how intense the brawling can be in the game.

This is the reality of hockey in today’s world, which can result in serious injuries, which are mostly cuts and bruises from the constant fist fighting on the ice. Fights have been known to begin over certain calls made by the referees that the players think are unfair, or because a team member from the opposite team is taunting them. To prevent the fights from escalating too badly, players are sent to the locker rooms to calm down. Understandably, hockey demands a high level of energy that also makes it quite prone to angry outbursts. In fact it can be very difficult not to get angry, but when it comes to the referee fighting, well, that’s a whole separate ballgame.
